New Delhi: Soon, there could be 100 per cent work from home for employees engaged in Special Economic Zones (SEZs). Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal on Tuesday said that the Centre is looking into the suggestion to allow full work from home for employees of units in SEZs.

Currently, work from home (WFH) is permitted for a maximum period of one year in a SEZ unit and it can be extended to 50 per cent of the total employees. In July, the Centre released a rule book which shared the categories of employees (including contractual employees) who will be allowed to work from home. These included employees of IT and ITeS SEZ units, those who are temporarily incapacitated, those who are travelling and those who are working offsite.

Goyal said the government has received requests from several quarters that still there are COVID-related restrictions at several places in different countries and people are not coming to offices.

"We had permitted work from home in SEZ units during COVID times. It was appreciated by all and it also helped in pushing our services exports. It was $254 billion last year. This year also there will be jump in that," the minister shared.

Adding that WFH can help in creating job opportunities in smaller cities like Rajkot and Una, Goyal noted, " There are many sectors wherein allowing work from home would lead to an increase in our exports. It is in the interest of the country to allow work from home.”
